Trash Disposal in Japan: Survival Guide to Not Anger Your Neighbors

In Japan, "common sense" is more important than fluency in Japanese. And the fastest way to show you belong is: THROWING OUT TRASH CORRECTLY. If you constantly violate trash rules, you can literally be evicted.

Trash Sorting

1. WHY IS IT SO COMPLICATED?

Japanese society is obsessed with cleanliness and recycling. Every neighborhood has its own specific "Trash Calendar". The "Neighborhood Watch" (usually elderly ladies) is always observing. If you throw a rice cooker into the burnable bag -> The next day, that bag will be returned to your doorstep with a red warning sticker.

2. BASIC TRASH CATEGORIES

  • Burnable (Moeru Gomi): Food scraps, paper scraps, old clothes. (Collected 2x/week).
  • Non-Burnable (Moenai Gomi): Metals, glass, ceramics. (Collected bi-weekly).
  • Plastic Bottles (Petto): Wash them, remove the label, take off the cap. (Labels and caps go into plastic recycling).
  • Cans & Glass Bottles: Rinse the inside.

3. THE NIGHTMARE OF "SODAI GOMI" (OVERSIZED TRASH)

Want to throw away an old mattress, broken table, or suitcase? Do NOT secretly dump it at the trash station!

Process for Large Trash:

  1. Measure the item.
  2. Go to the ward's Oversized Garbage Center website to register.
  3. Go to a Convenience Store and buy "Disposal Tickets" (A or B, ranging from 200 - 2,000 JPY depending on the item).
  4. Stick the ticket on the item and write your name/ID.
  5. Bring it to the designated spot early on the collection day.

=> Costs money + Costs time. This is why "Sayonara Sales" (giving away furniture for free) are so popular.

4. TIPS TO AVOID TROUBLE

  • Get the Calendar: When you move in, immediately get the Trash Calendar (Gomi Calendar) and stick it on your fridge.
  • Buy the Right Bags: Some cities (like Tokyo 23 wards) allow generic transparent bags. But many suburban cities REQUIRE designated city bags (which are more expensive). Wrong bag -> Garbage men won't take it.
  • Rinse Bento Boxes: Rinse oily bento boxes before throwing them in plastics. If too dirty -> throw them in burnable.

CONCLUSION

Proper disposal is the ultimate integration test. Don't be the person who makes locals say, "Ah, foreigners again..."
