The Pikachu Outbreak (Pikachu Tairyo Hassei Chu) is an annual summer festival where literally thousands of mascot Pikachus invade the city of Yokohama for a week of parades and stage shows.

1. EVENT OVERVIEW

When and Where:

  • Timing: Mid-August every year (usually aligning with the Obon holiday).
  • Location: Minato Mirai area in Yokohama (about 30-40 minutes south of Tokyo).
  • Ticket Price: Completely FREE!

2. MAIN ATTRACTIONS

The Pikachu Parade:

  • The main event! Dozens of Pikachus marching in sync down the street to catchy music.
  • Usually happens 2 or 3 times a day in different locations (e.g., Yamashita Park to the Red Brick Warehouse).

Splash Shows (Water Events):

  • Because Japanese Augusts are blisteringly hot, they host massive "Splash Shows" where Pikachus (and cast members) blast the audience with water cannons. Prepare to get soaked!

Night Parades (EDM/LED Shows):

  • In the evening, Pikachus wearing LED suits perform synchronized dances to EDM music.

Eevee Marches:

  • Recently, Eevees have joined the festival with their own dedicated marching events!

3. HOW TO SURVIVE THE FESTIVAL

This event draws millions of people. It is chaotic, hot, and crowded.

  • Arrive Early: If you want a front-row view of the parade, you need to lay down a picnic sheet at least 1-2 hours before the start time.
  • Hydrate: Heatstroke is a severe risk in Japanese Augusts. Bring a massive water bottle, a parasol (sun umbrella), and a battery-powered handheld fan.
  • Merch Hunting: Exclusive "Yokohama Outbreak" merchandise is sold at pop-up tents and the local Pokemon Center. It sells out instantly on Day 1, so prioritize shopping.

4. ONE-DAY ITINERARY OUTLINE

  • 10:00 AM: Arrive at Sakuragicho Station (Yokohama). Grab a free Pikachu paper visor.
  • 11:00 AM: Watch the first morning parade.
  • 1:00 PM: Eat lunch at the Red Brick Warehouse.
  • 3:00 PM: Participate in the Splash Show to cool down.
  • 5:00 PM: Visit the Yokohama Pokemon Center to buy merch.
  • 7:30 PM: Watch the illuminated Night Parade around the Ferris Wheel.

CONCLUSION

If you are visiting Japan in August, this is a bucket-list event. It is pure, unadulterated joy.
