Permanent Residency & HSP Guide 2025: Secret to PR in 1 Year

Permanent Residency (Eijuu - 永住) is the "Holy Grail" for foreigners in Japan. It allows you to stay indefinitely without renewing visas, change jobs freely, and enjoy almost all rights of a Japanese citizen.

Normally, it takes 10 years of residency to qualify. However, there is a legal "shortcut": the Highly Skilled Professional (HSP) point system.

Permanent Residency

PART 1: THE HSP ADVANTAGE

HSP is a point-based system evaluating your Education, Experience, Salary, Age, and Japanese ability.

Benefits:

  1. Fast-Track to PR:
    • 80+ points: Qualify for PR after 1 year.
    • 70-79 points: Qualify for PR after 3 years.
  2. Parent Sponsorship: Sponsor parents to live with you in Japan (if conditions are met).
  3. Spouse Work Rights: Spouses can work full-time without extra permissions.

PART 2: POINT SYSTEM (FOR ENGINEERS)

A. EDUCATION (Max 30 pts)

  • PhD: 30 pts
  • Master: 20 pts
  • Bachelor: 10 pts
  • Bonus: Graduated from a Japanese Univ: +10 pts

B. EXPERIENCE (Max 25 pts)

  • 10+ years: 25 pts
  • 7-9 years: 20 pts
  • 5-6 years: 15 pts

C. SALARY (Max 40 pts)

  • 10M+ JPY/year: 40 pts
  • 8M+ JPY/year: 30 pts
  • 6M+ JPY/year: 20 pts

D. AGE (Max 15 pts)

  • Under 30: 15 pts
  • 30-34: 10 pts

E. JAPANESE ABILITY

  • JLPT N1: 15 pts
  • JLPT N2: 10 pts

PART 3: DEADLY MISTAKES TO AVOID

  1. Late Taxes/Pension: Even one late payment can cause a PR rejection. Immigration checks the last 2-5 years.
  2. Traffic Violations: Multiple small fines (parking, speeding) show lack of legal compliance.
  3. Too Many Dependents: If you claim 5+ dependents abroad to lower taxes, Immigration might doubt your financial stability.

CONCLUSION

Calculate your points today! If you are close to 70 or 80, aim for the next JLPT level or a salary raise to secure your future in Japan.
