The Japan Rail Pass (JR Pass) is an "all-you-can-ride" ticket for foreign tourists. However, after the massive price hike, it is no longer an automatic "must-buy".
1. WHAT IS THE JR PASS?
Unlimited travel on JR trains for 7, 14, or 21 days.
Prices (Current):
- 7 Days: 50,000 JPY (Ordinary) / 70,000 JPY (Green Car)
- 14 Days: 80,000 JPY
- 21 Days: 100,000 JPY
What's Included:
- Most JR trains across Japan.
- Local JR trains in cities (like the Yamanote Line).
- JR Buses and the Miyajima Ferry.
What's NOT Included:
- Private railways (Tokyo Metro, Odakyu, Keihan, etc.).
- The fastest Shinkansen trains (Nozomi and Mizuho). You must take the slightly slower Hikari or Sakura.
2. IS IT WORTH BUYING?
The Break-Even Math:
Let's look at a standard Tokyo-Kyoto-Osaka-Hiroshima route:
- Tokyo β Kyoto (Hikari): 13,320 JPY
- Kyoto β Osaka: 560 JPY
- Osaka β Hiroshima: 10,570 JPY
- Hiroshima β Tokyo: 18,380 JPY
Total Cost: 42,830 JPY.
Verdict: If this is your itinerary, a 7-Day JR Pass (50,000 JPY) is a waste of money (you lose 7,000 JPY).
It IS worth it if:
- You travel from Tokyo to Osaka/Kyoto AND BACK, plus take another long-distance trip to Hokkaido or Kyushu within 7 days.
3. HOW TO BUY & ACTIVATE
Step 1: Buy the Exchange Order (EO)
- Buy online at the official site or an authorized travel agency.
- You will receive a physical voucher (EO) in the mail.
Step 2: Exchange it in Japan
- Take your EO and Passport (with Temporary Visitor stamp) to a major JR Ticket Office (e.g., at Narita Airport or Tokyo Station).
- Pick your start date (it doesn't have to be that exact day).
- Receive the actual JR Pass.
Step 3: Using It
- You can now insert the pass into the automatic ticket gates! (In the past, you had to show it to manned staff).
4. PRO TIPS
- Free Seat Reservations: You can reserve seats for free at ticket machines or ticket offices. Highly recommended for Shinkansen!
- Don't Lose It: If you lose the physical pass, you lose your money. No replacements are issued.
5. ALTERNATIVES: REGIONAL PASSES
If you are staying in one area, Regional Passes offer incredible value:
- JR Kansai Area Pass: ~2,800 JPY/day (Covers Osaka, Kyoto, Nara, Kobe).
- JR Tokyo Wide Pass: 10,180 JPY for 3 days (Great for Nikko or Mt. Fuji/Kawaguchiko).
CONCLUSION
Do the math before you buy! Use a JR Fare Calculator online based on your exact itinerary.
