The Shinkansen (Bullet Train) is a symbol of Japan. It is punctual to the second, smooth, and incredibly fast.

1. TYPES OF SHINKANSEN

By Speed:

  • Nozomi: The fastest, stops at fewest stations. Tokyo β†’ Osaka takes 2.5 hours.
  • Hikari: Medium speed, makes a few more stops. Tokyo β†’ Osaka takes 3 hours.
  • Kodama: The slowest, stops at every station. Tokyo β†’ Osaka takes 4 hours.

Note: The JR Pass CANNOT be used for the Nozomi (you must buy a separate ticket).

By Class:

  • Ordinary: Standard seats, very spacious with great legroom.
  • Green Car: First class. Wider leather seats, quieter.
  • Gran Class: Ultra-luxury with food service (available only on certain lines).

2. HOW TO BOOK

Online (Recommended):

  • JR East Website: eki-net.com
  • SmartEX App: For the Tokaido/Sanyo lines (Tokyo to Osaka/Kyoto).
  • Book up to a month in advance for discounts.

At the Station:

  • Go to the "Midori no Madoguchi" (Ticket Office).
  • Or use the automated Shinkansen ticket machines.

3. CHOOSING YOUR SEAT

  • Window Seat: Great views.
  • Aisle Seat: Easy access to the bathroom.
  • Pro Tip: Choose the completely right-side window seat (Seat E) when traveling from Tokyo to Osaka to see Mt. Fuji!

4. SAVING MONEY

JR Pass:

  • Only worth it if you are making multiple long-distance round trips (See JR Pass article).

Early Bird Tickets (Hayatoku):

  • Book 21 days in advance: Up to 35% off.
  • Book 3 days in advance: ~10% off.

5. BULLET TRAIN ETIQUETTE

  • No phone calls: Put your phone on silent. You can take calls in the area between train cars.
  • Eating is OK: Buying an Ekiben (Station Bento) and eating it on the train is a beloved cultural tradition!
  • Luggage: Store small bags in the overhead racks. For oversized luggage, you must reserve a specific seat with luggage space behind it.

CONCLUSION

Riding the Shinkansen is a must-do experience in Japan. Book early to save money!
