If Tokyo represents modern Japan, Kansai (Kyoto/Osaka/Nara) is the soul of its traditional culture. This is the "Golden Route" that everyone must experience at least once.
1. KYOTO - THE ANCIENT CAPITAL
- Fushimi Inari Taisha: The shrine with 10,000 red Torii gates. Go as early as 6 AM to avoid crowds.
- Golden Pavilion (Kinkakuji): Covered in real gold leaf, reflecting beautifully on the pond.
- Gion District: The only place where you might bump into a real Geisha (Maiko).
- Kiyomizu-dera: Breathtaking panoramic view of Kyoto, especially during autumn.
2. OSAKA - THE FOOD AND FUN CAPITAL
Osaka is much more outgoing, loud, and fun compared to Kyoto.
- Dotonbori: The iconic food street with the Glico running man sign.
- Must-eat: Takoyaki, Okonomiyaki, Kushikatsu.
- Osaka Castle: Majestic and grand.
- Universal Studios Japan (USJ): (See separate article).
3. NARA - THE CITY OF DEER
A 40-minute train ride from Osaka.
- Nara Park: Over 1,000 free-roaming deer. Buy rice crackers (Shika senbei) to feed them.
- Warning: The deer here can be aggressive. They might nudge or bite if you tease them.
TRANSPORTATION: KANSAI THRU PASS OR JR PASS?
- Kansai Thru Pass (KTP): Covers most subways, buses, and private railways in Kansai (except JR).
- Best for: Extensive traveling within Kyoto and Osaka cities.
- JR Kansai Area Pass:
- Best for: Long-distance travel (e.g., to Himeji or Kobe) using fast JR trains.
=> Advice: For a basic Kyoto-Osaka-Nara trip, simply using an IC Card (Suica/Icoca) is the most flexible and often cheaper.
CONCLUSION
Dedicate at least 4 days to this route (2 for Kyoto, 1 for Nara, 1 for Osaka). Don't forget to try Kobe beef if your budget allows!
