JAPAN

Onsen (Hot Springs) are the heart and soul of Japan. But for foreigners, getting completely naked in front of strangers can be a culture shock.

1. HOW TO WEAR A YUKATA CORRECTLY

  • The Ultimate Rule: The left side must cross over the right side (Left over Right).
  • Why? Wearing it right-over-left is how the deceased are dressed for funerals. You will severely alarm the locals!

2. THE 5-STEP ONSEN ROUTINE (TEXTBOOK STANDARD)

  1. Undress (Datsuijo): 100% naked. Leave underwear and large towels in your locker. Bring ONLY the small modesty towel (Tenugui).
  2. Rinse (Kakeyu): Sit on a stool and splash hot water over yourself. Wash your body thoroughly with soap. Never enter the bath dirty.
  3. Enter the Bath (Nyuyoku):
    • Step in slowly. No splashing or diving.
    • Place your small towel on your head (it keeps the water clean and regulates head temperature).
    • Soak for 5-10 minutes.
  4. Sauna & Cold Bath (Mizuburo):
    • 10 mins in Sauna -> Rinse with cold water -> 1 min in the cold bath. It's incredibly refreshing (but beware of thermal shock).
  5. Dry Off: Dry yourself completely with your small towel BEFORE re-entering the locker room. Avoid dripping water on the floor.

3. TATTOO-FRIENDLY ONSEN MAP

Most Onsens ban tattoos (due to Yakuza association). But things are changing. Here are some great spots:

  • In Tokyo:

    • Mannen-yu (Shinjuku): A classic Sento. Accepts all tattoos.
    • Koganeyu (Kinshicho): Beautiful modern (hipster) design. Serves craft beer.
    • Hisamatsu-yu (Nerima): Features indoor projection mapping.
  • In Kyoto:

    • Funaoka Onsen: A nostalgic cultural heritage site with beautiful wood carvings.
  • Pro Tip: If you have a small tattoo (<10cm), buy "Tattoo Cover Stickers" at Donki or pharmacies to hide it, and 90% of places will let you in.

Japanese Onsen

CONCLUSION

An Onsen is not just a bath; it's meditation. Relax your body, forget your deadlines, and enjoy the water.
