The Spartan N3 Plan: 6 Months of Survival
You want speed? You must accept pain. This roadmap took me from Zero to passing N3 (140/180) in half a year.
Phase 1: Foundation (Month 1-2) - The Grind
- Goal: Master Hiragana/Katakana + Finish Minna no Nihongo 1 (N5).
- Kanji: First 100-150 characters (Numbers, Dates, Directions).
- Book: Kanji Look and Learn.
- Routine:
- Morning: 30 mins passive listening.
- Night: 2 hours grammar/vocab hardcore.
- Tip: Don't aim for 100% perfection. Aim for 80% retention and MOVE ON. Repetition > Perfection.
Phase 2: Acceleration (Month 3-4) - The Wall
- Goal: Finish Minna no Nihongo 2 (N4). This is where most people quit.
- Kanji: Next 300 characters (Total 450).
- Reading: Start NHK News Web Easy.
- Rule: Do NOT use a dictionary for every word. Guess from context. Surrender the need to understand 100%.
Phase 3: Finish Line (Month 5-6) - Exam Strategy
- Goal: Core N3 Grammar & Exam Practice.
- Book: Mimi Kara Oboeru (Learn by Ear) - Best for N3.
- Strategy:
- Mon-Fri: New Input (Vocab, Grammar).
- Sat: Full Mock Exam (Timed strictly). This hurts but is necessary.
- Sun: Review. Analyze WHY you got answers wrong. This is where you actually learn.
Final Word: Japanese doesn't require high IQ. It requires grit.
