Connects a result or conclusion from the previous sentence. Formal, used in thesis or reports.

彼は誠実な人だ。したがって、信頼されている。
Kare wa seijitsu na hito da. Shitagatte, shinrai sarete iru.
He is a sincere person. Therefore, he is trusted.
AはBに等しい。BはCに等しい。したがって、AはCに等しい。
A wa B ni hitoshii. B wa C ni hitoshii. Shitagatte, A wa C ni hitoshii.
A equals B. B equals C. Therefore, A equals C.
不況が続いている。したがって、失業率も高い。
Fukyou ga tsuzuite iru. Shitagatte, shitsugyouritsu mo takai.
The recession continues. Consequently, the unemployment rate is high.
今日は祝日だ。したがって、学校は休みだ。
Kyou wa shukujitsu da. Shitagatte, gakkou wa yasumi da.
Today is a holiday. Therefore, school is closed.
