201. 上は : Now that / Since / As long as....

V-plain + 上は / V-ta + 上は💡Usage
Used to express determination, advice, or an obligation based on a fact established in the previous clause.
📚Examples
日本に来た上は、日本語が上手になりたい。
Nihon ni kita ue wa, nihongo ga jouzu ni naritai.
Now that I've come to Japan, I want to become proficient in Japanese.
約束した上は、守らなければならない。
Yakusoku shita ue wa, mamoranahereba naranai.
Now that I've made a promise, I must keep it.
試合に出る上は、優勝したい。
Shiai ni deru ue wa, yuushou shitai.
Now that I'm appearing in the match, I want to win.
社長になった上は、社員の幸せを考えなければならない。
Shachou ni natta ue wa, shain no shiawase wo kangaenahereba naranai.
Now that I've become president, I must consider the happiness of the employees.
計画を始めた上は、途中でやめるわけにはいかない。
Keikaku wo hajimeta ue wa, tochuu de yameru wake ni wa ikanai.
Now that we've started the plan, we cannot quit halfway.
自分が選んだ道である上は、最後まで頑張るつもりだ。
Jibun ga eranda michi de aru ue wa, saigo made ganbaru tsumori da.
Since it's the path I chose myself, I intend to do my best until the end.

Gakkou no sensei ni natta ue wa, kibishiku shidou suru tsumori desu.

Himitsu wo kiite shimatta ue wa, dare ni mo ienai.
