Expresses realizing something only after doing it. "Only after...", "Not until...".

自分が親になってはじめて、両親の苦労や子育ての大変さが本当によく分かりました。
Jibun ga oya ni natte hajimete, ryoushin no kurou ya kosodate no taihensa ga hontou ni yoku wakarimashita.
Only after becoming a parent myself did I truly understand the hardships of my parents and the difficulty of raising children.
