Expresses an unexpected or contradictory result. "However...", "But...".

毎日一生懸命に勉強した. ところが、試験には合格できなかった。
Mainichi isshoukenmei ni benkyou shita. Tokoro ga, shiken ni wa goukaku dekinakatta.
I studied hard every day. However, I couldn't pass the exam.
天気予報では晴れると言っていた. ところが、午後から急に大雨が降ってきた。
Tenkiyohou de wa hareru to itte ita. Tokoro ga, gogo kara kyuu ni ooame ga futte kita.
The weather forecast said it would be sunny. However, it suddenly started to rain heavily in the afternoon.
彼は約束の時間に来るはずだった. ところが、いくら待っても姿を見せなかった。
Kare wa yakusoku no jikan ni kuru hazu datta. Tokoro ga, ikura mattemo sugata wo misenakatta.
He was supposed to come at the appointed time. However, no matter how much I waited, he didn't show up.
薬を飲めばすぐに治ると思った. ところが、逆に熱が高くなってしまった。
Kusuri wo nomeba sugu ni naoru to omotta. Tokoro ga, gyaku ni netsu ga takaku natte shimatta.
I thought I would cure quickly if I took the medicine. However, on the contrary, my fever went up.
ダイエットをして体重が減った. ところが、少し食べすぎたらすぐに元に戻ってしまった。
