Lesson 2: This, That, That over there

Learn how to use confirmation questions, demonstratives (Kore/Sore/Are), and possession.

Meaning

Confirmation question (Is it...?)

✏️ Structure

A: ～は Nですか。 B: 　はい、Nです。ー　はい、そうです。ー　いいえ、Nじゃありません。ー　いいえ、N1です。ー　いいえ、ちがいます。

💡 Usage

For confirmation questions, you can answer "はい、そうです" instead of "はい、N desu".

Answer "いいえ、ちがいます" or "いいえ、N1 desu" instead of "いいえ, N ja arimasen".

これは新聞しんぶんですか。

Kore wa shinbun desu ka.

Is this a newspaper?

•

はい、そうです。

Hai, sou desu.

Yes, it is.

それは辞書じしょですか。

Sore wa jisho desu ka.

Is that a dictionary?

•

いいえ、辞書じしょじゃありません。

Iie, jisho ja arimasen.

No, it is not a dictionary.

これ／それ／あれは N です

💡 Usage

These are demonstrative pronouns, used as nouns.

Kore: Object near the speaker.
Sore: Object near the listener.
Are: Object far from both.

📚 Examples

•

それは辞書じしょですか。

Sore wa jisho desu ka.

Is that a dictionary?

•

これは私わたしの傘かさです。

Kore wa watashi no kasa desu.

This is my umbrella.

あれは誰だれの自転車じてんしゃですか。

Are wa dare no jitensha desu ka.

Whose bicycle is that?

これはコンピューターですか。

Kore wa konpyuutaa desu ka.

Is this a computer?

•

それはボールペンじゃありません。

Sore wa boorupen ja arimasen.

This N / That N / That N over there

この／その／あの N は～です

💡 Usage

The words "Kono, Sono, Ano" modify the noun following them.

Kono N: This N (near speaker)
Sono N: That N (near listener)
Ano N: That N over there (far from both)

Note: "Kono/Sono/Ano" must be accompanied by a noun; they cannot stand alone.

この本ほんは私わたしのです。

Kono hon wa watashi no desu.

This book is mine.

•

あの方かたはどなたですか。

Ano kata wa donata desu ka.

Who is that person?

•

その鞄かばんは山田やまださんのではありません。

Sono kaban wa Yamada-san no dewa arimasen.

That bag is not Mr. Yamada's.

•

このパソコンはいくらですか。

Kono pasokon wa ikura desu ka.

How much is this computer?

あの靴くつはとても高たかいです。

Ano kutsu wa totemo takai desu.

Those shoes over there are very expensive.

Meaning

S1 or S2? (Alternative question)

✏️ Structure

～は N1 ですか、N2 ですか。

💡 Usage

A question asking to choose between two or more things/people. The listener chooses N1 or N2 to answer.

Note: Do not use "Hai" or "Iie" to answer this type of question.

📚 Examples

•

これは「９」ですか、「７」ですか。

Kore wa "kyuu" desu ka, "nana" desu ka.

Is this a "9" or a "7"?

•

…「９」です。

..."kyuu" desu.

...It is a "9".

•

それは「あ」ですか、「い」ですか。

Sore wa "a" desu ka, "i" desu ka.

Is that "a" or "i"?

•

あれは鉛筆えんぴつですか、ボールペンですか。

Are wa enpitsu desu ka, boorupen desu ka.

Is that a pencil or a ballpoint pen?

💡 Usage

Used when N1 is the owner of N2 ("Whose is what?").

Is that so? / I see.

✏️ Structure

A: (Thông tin mới) B: そうですか。

💡 Usage

Used when the listener receives new information and wants to show they understood or acknowledged it.

Pronunciation: Lower the intonation at the end.
