Used to describe an action that occurs almost immediately after another, emphasizing surprise or rapid progression.

彼は玄関を開けるや否や、バタッと倒れてしまった。
Kare wa genkan wo akeru ya ina ya, batatsu to taorete shimatta.
As soon as he opened the entrance, he collapsed suddenly.
