V-ta + きり💡Usage
Used when an action occurs and the state remains unchanged, often implying that something expected did not happen afterwards.
📚Examples
彼は今朝出かけたきり、まだ帰ってこない。
Kare wa kesa dekaketa kiri, mada kaette konai.
He went out this morning and hasn't come back since.
その本は一度読んだきり、机の中にしまったままだ。
Sono hon wa ichido yonda kiri, tsukue no naka ni shimatta mama da.
I read that book once and have kept it in my desk ever since.
彼女とは、3年前に会ったきりだ。
Kanojo to wa, san-nen mae ni atta kiri da.
I haven't seen her since we met three years ago.
息子は自分の部屋に入ったきり、出てこない。
Musuko wa jibun no heya ni haitta kiri, detekonai.
My son went into his room and hasn't come out since.
「貸して」と言ったきり、彼は本を返してくれない。
Kashite to itta kiri, kare wa hon wo kaeshite kurenai.
He asked to borrow the book and hasn't returned it since.
入院したと聞いたきり、彼の消息が分からない。
Nyuuin shita to kiita kiri, kare no shousoku ga wakaranai.
Ever since I heard he was hospitalized, I haven't heard anything about him.
彼は「さよなら」と言ったきり, 去って行った。
Kare wa "sayonara" to itta kiri, satte itta.
He just said "goodbye" and walked away.
去年の夏に海へ行ったきり、泳いでいない。
Kyonen natsu ni umi e itta kiri, oyoide inai.
I haven't swum since I went to the sea last summer.
その服は買ったきり、一度も着ていない。
Sono fuku wa katta kiri, ichido mo kite inai.
I haven't worn those clothes once since I bought them.
彼は黙ったきり、何も話そうとしない。
Kare wa damatta kiri, nanimo hanasou to shinai.
He has remained silent and won't say a word.
