Lesson 44: I ate too much

Learn about expressing excess (~Sugimasu), ease or difficulty of doing something (~Yasui / ~Nikui), and changing the state of an object (~Shimasu).

Meaning

Too much ... / Excessively ...

✏️ Structure

- V-masu (bỏ masu) + すぎます - Adj-i (bỏ i) + すぎます - Adj-na (bỏ na) + すぎます

💡 Usage

Indicates that an action or state greatly exceeds the necessary or normal level. Usually carries a deeply undesirable, complaining, or negative nuance.

📚 Examples

ゆうべ おさけみすぎました。

Yuube osake o nomisugimashita.

I unfortunately drank too much alcohol last night.

この シャツは おおきすぎます。

Kono shatsu wa ookisugimasu.

This shirt is way too big for me.

この 問題もんだい複雑ふくざつすぎます。

Kono mondai wa fukuzatsusugimasu.

This issue is too painfully complicated.

最近さいきんパソコンを使つかいすぎて、いたいです。

Saikin pasokon o tsukaisugite, me ga itai desu.

Lately I've used the computer too much, so my eyes literally hurt.

このパソコンはたかすぎます。

Kono pasokon wa takasugimasu.

This computer is way too astronomically expensive.
