1. Expresses an action that must be taken to save face or because one is in front of someone. 2. Due to a certain reason or position, one is forced to act.
📚Examples
「絶対に勝つ」と言ったてまえ、あきらめるわけにはいかない。
「Zettai ni katsu」 to itta temae, akirameru wake ni wa ikanai.
Since I said "I will definitely win," I cannot give up.
子供たちのてまえ、弱いところは見せられない。
Kodomotachi no temae, yowai tokoro wa miserarenai.
In front of the children, I cannot show my weakness.
以前お世話になったてまえ、断るのが難しい。
Izen osewa ni natta temae, kotowaru no ga muzukashii.
Having been helped by them before, it is difficult to refuse.
自分が反対したてまえ、賛成に回ることはできない。
Jibun ga hantai shita temae, sansei ni mawaru koto wa dekinai.
Since I opposed it, I cannot switch to supporting it.
