Used when the answer or result is contrary to expectation.

「試験、どうだった？」「それが、全然だめだったんだ。」
Shiken, dou datta? - Sore ga, zenzen dame datta n da.
"How was the exam?" "Actually, it was terrible."
「彼、来た？」「それが、まだ来てないのよ。」
Kare, kita? - Sore ga, mada kite nai no yo.
"Did he come?" "Well, he hasn't come yet."
「仕事、終わった？」「それが、これから残業なんだ。」
Shigoto, owatta? - Sore ga, korekara zangyou na n da.
"Finished work?" "Actually, I have to work overtime now."
「天気予報は晴れだったよね。」「それが、雨が降ってきたんだ。」
Tenkiyohou wa hare datta yo ne. - Sore ga, ame ga futte kita n da.
"The weather forecast said sunny, right?" "Yeah, but it started raining."

Nakanaori shita? - Sore ga, motto waruku natta.

Purezento, yorokonde kureta? - Sore ga, ki ni iranakatta mitai.
"Did she like the present?" "Actually, she didn't seem to like it."

Maniatta? - Sore ga, ippun okurete shimatta.
"Did you make it?" "Actually, I was one minute late."
「美味しかった？」「それが、味がなくて...」
Oishikatta? - Sore ga, aji ga nakute...
"Was it good?" "Well, it had no taste..."
「見つかった？」「それが、どこにもないんだ。」
Mitsukatta? - Sore ga, doko ni mo nai n da.
"Did you find it?" "Actually, it's nowhere to be found."
「彼、元気？」「それが、入院しているらしいよ。」
Kare, genki? - Sore ga, nyuuin shite iru rashii yo.
"Is he well?" "Actually, I hear he is hospitalized."
