9. がてら : While / At the same time....

✏️Structure
N + がてら / V-masu + がてら💡Usage
Used when doing a primary action and taking the opportunity to do another action at the same time. Commonly used with walking, shopping, or visits.
📚Examples
散歩がてら、パンを買いに行こう。
Sanpo gatera, pan wo kai ni ikou.
Let's go buy some bread while we're out for a walk.
遊びがてら、私の家にも寄ってください。
Asobi gatera, watashi no ie ni mo yotte kudasai.
Please drop by my house while you're out having fun.
運動がてら、駅まで歩くことにした。
Undou gatera, eki made aruku koto ni shita.
I decided to walk to the station for some exercise.
帰省がてら、温泉に寄ってきた。
Kisei gatera, onsen ni yotte kita.
While returning home, I stopped by a hot spring.
買い物にがてら、図書館で本を返してきた。
Kaimono ni gatera, toshokan de hon wo kaeshite kita.
While out shopping, I returned a book to the library.
出張がてら、京都の友人を訪ねた。
Shucchou gatera, Kyouto no yuujin wo tazuneta.
During my business trip, I visited a friend in Kyoto.
ドライブがてら、郊外のレストランへ行った。
Doraibu gatera, kougai no resutoran he itta.
While out for a drive, we went to a restaurant in the suburbs.
花見がてら、近所を散策する。
Hanami gatera, kinjo wo sansaku suru.
While out for cherry blossom viewing, I'll take a stroll around the neighborhood.
仕事の打ち合わせがてら、昼食を済ませた。
Shigoto no uchiawase gatera, chuushoku wo sumaseta.
We had lunch during our business meeting.
涼みがてら、川沿いを歩く。
Suzumi gatera, kawazoi wo aruku.
While cooling off, I'll walk along the river.
